As we immerse ourselves in the throes of a chilly winter, Starbucks is ensuring we stay properly caffeinated with a couple fresh espresso choices. Starting tomorrow, Starbucks branches will proudly serve the espresso-centric Cortado, as confirmed by an official brand representative. The Cortado, a hot beverage featuring three shots of ristretto - a more intense and smoother adaptation of Starbucks’ core Blonde Espresso - with equal parts frothy milk, introduces a subtle, pleasant flavor that is both remarkable and welcoming, according to Starbucks drink developer Ricky Gonzalez.

The ristretto process amplifies the rich, concentrated flavors by using the same quantity of coffee grounds as a standard espresso shot, but less water and a shorter brewing period to create a superiorly sweet and rich flavor. Gonzalez stated via email that the Cortado profile enhances the taste when paired with different milks such as whole or oat milk, retaining the balanced and smooth flavor of the classic Cortado.

This under-the-radar beverage that was birthed in Spain takes its name from the Spanish word “cortar," which literally means to cut - a nod to its one-to-one preparation with any choice of steamed milk. Starbucks will exclusively serve it hot in an eight-ounce short-sized cup.

There’s an option to order the Brown Sugar Oatmilk Cortado, adding Starbucks’ signature Brown Sugar syrup and plant milk. Furthermore, cold customizations won't be available due to the company's commitment to maintain the drink’s original flavor profile and quality.

The new beverage drew positive responses during testing in selective stores in South Florida and Chicago based on the high demand by customers in these regions. The community regarded the beverage as a faithful take on the much-loved original Cortado, explains Gonzalez.

In addition to the Cortado debut, there's a significant change in relation to Starbucks' sought-after matcha. Starbucks baristas are now directed to prepare the matcha using a specific new blender part intended to create a smoother, more consistent blend. Also, matcha powder will now be completely unsweetened and the classic syrup of Starbucks will be the default sweetener of all matcha orders, providing customers the ability to personalize the sweetness of their latte.

For those with a sweet tooth, the Pistachio Latte, both hot and cold versions, makes a comeback to the menu, giving a distinctly sweet and nutty twist to the classic latte. Joining the menu as a permanent addition is the Spicy Falafel Pocket, an all-day snack, accompanied by a chipotle almond dipping sauce available on a limited basis. Further additions include the Vanilla Bean Custard Danish and a Valentine’s Day Cake Pop to debut later in the season.

Markie_Devo, a reputable food blogger had anticipated these changes and new additions to the menu last year on Instagram, and it now seems his predictions have validated. We're curious to see if the speculated returning drinks and Valentine treats will indeed be confirmed in due course.

As we trudge through the waning days of January, devoid of the spirit of the holidays, these novel options may be the perfect remedy to uplift our spirits.
