Starbucks Celebrates Holiday Season by Ditching Non-Dairy Milk Surcharge
- Nov 2, 2024
As the holiday gifting season rolls in, budget-friendly buys are on everyone's mind. Wherever we can make a little saving, we willingly oblige. This holiday, you'll be able to save those extra 70 cents with Starbucks deciding to cut its non-dairy milk surcharge.
From November 7, after the revamping of their holiday menu, Starbucks is doing away with all additional costs for non-dairy milk, according to a declaration made to Food & Wine. Currently, non-dairy milk, including soy, oat, almond, and coconut milk, cost customers an extra 70 to 80 cents, a practice Starbucks is putting to rest. Starbucks anticipates that this change, to be enforced in all Starbucks-owned stores in the United States and Canada, will affect about fifty percent of all customers, as milk substitution is the most common customization, right after extra espresso shots.
Brian Niccol, CEO and chairman of the iconic coffee company, in the press release issued on October 30, states that this step aligns with the company's original vision. He quotes, "We're focusing on what has always set Starbucks apart - a welcoming coffeehouse where people gather and we serve the finest coffee handcrafted by our skilled baristas. This is just one of many changes we’ll make to ensure a visit to Starbucks is worth it every time."
This shift in pricing strategy comes at a time when restaurants across the nation are offering more attractive prices, phasing out pricey menus, and setting up various incentives for budget-savvy customers. Starbucks also innovated its offerings this summer with the limited-run Pairings Menu.
Coffee enthusiasts who prefer non-dairy milk have been advocating for this change for some time. Earlier this year in March, the coffee chain was confronted with a lawsuit by three Californian residents who argued that the non-dairy surcharge discriminated against lactose-intolerant customers, reports CBS News. Nonetheless, Starbucks maintains that patrons do have the option to add non-dairy milk to a select range of menu items, including brewed and iced coffee, tea, cold brew, and Americanos. The coffee powerhouse refrains from commenting on ongoing litigation.
While it is still unknown what other excitements Starbucks' holiday menu might present, the anticipation is infectious. For now, we fantasize about Sugar Plum Danishes and almond milk lattes, now more economical than ever.
