McRib Returns: McDonald's Brings Back Fan-Favorite Sandwich in the UK
- Oct 24, 2024
After almost a decade away, the McRib, an iconic fast food offering from McDonald's, is again set to sizzle in the UK. The boneless pork sandwich that had its debut in the early 1980s is now back on the lin-up in McDonald's restaurants across the United Kingdom, having been removed from permanent circulation roughly a decade ago.
"The McRib is more than a mere sandwich; it's a sensation," Thomas O’Neill, McDonald's U.K.'s head of menu, said while revealing the news to The Independent. "We've listened to the clamor from our customers - the many de facto campaigns started on social media channels, and public petitions – and we're exhilarated to finally reintroduce this beloved entry into our menus. With the level of affection directed at the McRib, it was inevitable. Now was the moment to deliver and satiate the longing of McRib fans nationwide."
However, food enthusiasts should be aware: the sandwich’s reappearance is a fleeting one, so if UK-bound, every opportunity should be seized to relish it.
But US-based McRib devotees need not feel left out. McDonald's has not yet commented on a potential stateside return, but McDonald's US president, Joe Erlinger, hinted at the sandwich’s come back "later this year" during a chat with the Today Show last June. Furthermore, Missouri's Springfield News-Leader recently carried a report claiming the McRib would make a reappearance in Greater Ozarks region's McDonald's outlets on November 27th.
Meanwhile in Kansas, The Topeka Capital-Journal - where the McRib was first launched - announced in mid-October that the timeless menu item should be available in Topeka's McDonald's establishments ready for sale by the week of November 25.
For those unfamiliar, the McRib is comprised of a boneless pork patty shaped like a rib, pickles, onions, and the signature McRib Sauce, all nestled between a homestyle bun.
For the eager fans wanting to hunt down a McRib, the McRib Locator website maps out the global locations serving up the sandwich. The most recent update shows availability in the UK, Canada, and Guatemala.
Interesting side note, German McDonald's restaurants never truly parted ways with the McRib. Its popularity there deemed it too much of a favorite to permanently remove from their menu.
