Having started in 1937 with a coveted yeast-raised doughnut recipe from a New Orleans chef, Vernon Rudolph began his pastry empire in Old Salem, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Selling his sugary creations to neighborhood grocery shops, his business swiftly took off. By the 1940s, he ran a series of stores offering delectable delights like coconut, sugared, cream-filled, and jelly doughnuts, cinnamon swirls, and of course, the iconic Original Glazed doughnuts.

The 1960s saw the dawn of the chain's famed automated baking system. Today, with more than 700 stores scattered across the globe, Krispy Kreme continues to provide these pastries to sweet-toothed customers. This coming Friday, July 12, the company is planning to usher in its 87th birthday in style, making its doughnuts even more accessible to all.

To mark this celebratory occasion, Krispy Kreme is selling its Original Glazed doughnuts by the dozen for a mere 87 cents, paired with the purchase of any dozen at full price.

Dave Skena, Krispy Kreme's Global Chief Brand Officer, said in a statement to Food & Wine, “This long-standing tradition of rewarding our fans on our birthday highlights our appreciation. An offering of a dozen Original Glazed doughnuts for just 87 cents with the purchase of any other dozen is our way of saying thank you to our loyal fans who have supported us through the years.”

This deal does come with some conditions. In-store and drive-thru orders will be limited to a maximum of two dozen, while online purchases for pickup or delivery from participating branches will cap at one dozen. Naturally, the deal is dependent on supply, and only valid this coming Friday. Use the code "BDAY" to receive the discount when purchasing online.

If you miss the birthday celebration, worry not. Krispy Kreme regularly whips out limited-edition offerings and discounts. Recently, they introduced the Reese's Peanut Butter Doughnut to the U.S., marking National Doughnut Day with a free doughnut giveaway. Also, they now offer mini doughnut options, perfect for a bite-size treat. So, there will always be another opportunity to roll in and celebrate with Krispy Kreme.
