The title of America's biggest seller of sushi isn't held by a renowned establishment like Nobu or Sugarfish, but rather by a humble grocery chain. Kroger, with its over 1,800 stores spread across the country, is the leading retailer for sushi enthusiasts nationwide. From maki and nigiri to sashimi and beyond, Kroger offers an in-house variety of sushi, reflecting the popularity of its deli-style sushi bar.

Kroger is saluting its sushi dominance with specials for International Sushi Day on June 18. Notably, the chain is introducing the Cheetos Flamin’ Hot California Roll-a unique fusion of snack-aisle favorites with a traditional Californian roll filled with imitation crab sticks, cucumber spears, and avocado. This eccentric variant, dusted with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and finished with a spicy sauce, is sure to be a summer party hit.

The Flamin’ Hot Cheetos roll is only the first of yet further spicy surprises, with the Doritos Flamin’ Hot Limón Shrimp Tempura Roll expected later this summer. These vibrant rolls are currently available at all Kroger outlets until July 31.

There's more! To celebrate National Sushi Day, Kroger has lined up exciting deals till June 18. Shoppers can make savings of $2 on any fresh sushi item priced at $11.99 or higher with their loyalty card. In addition, DoorDash and Uber Eats customers can participate in a buy one get one free sushi roll special, and from June 20 to July 24, a half-off deal is available for DashPass members ordering $20 or more worth of Kroger sushi through DoorDash.

The practice of selling fresh sushi on-premises began in 1991 for Kroger. The endeavor has proven immensely successful; now, the grocery giant sells more than a million rolls each week. Beyond sushi, Kroger also sells dumplings, bao, poke, rice bowls, salads, and more at its sushi counters.

However, Kroger isn't the lone grocery chain in the sushi biz. Southern stores like Publix offer daily sushi options, midwestern chains like Mariano’s and Jewel have sushi counters, and northeastern name Wegman's is a common choice, despite recent disputes at its new Manhattan location over potential omakase fraud. From last summer's high demand for Trader Joe’s oversized Korean maki, it's clear that shoppers appreciate conveniently packaged sushi.

Grocery store sushi has gained popularity on Reddit, gaining the approval of users who praised Kroger's sushi counter, especially for those who are short on time or looking to cut back on spending.
