If you find yourself craving the irresistibly aromatic gingerbread latte, you'll be pleased to know that with some items typically found in the pantry, you can whip up your own version of this coffeehouse classic right at home. A cup of homemade cinnamon syrup, a touch of ground ginger, and a scoop of molasses are all it takes to imitate the unique taste of freshly baked gingerbread, layered with the rich smooth warmth of steamed milk and a dusting of ground cinnamon.

What makes this delightful beverage stand out? As Nicole Hopper, a recipe tester, puts it: “It's a wonderfully creamy and sweet coffee drink, with a satisfying hint of warm spice. The balance is perfect - just the right amount of sweetness without overpowering the espresso flavor.”

While the traditional recipe calls for whole milk, those who are lactose-intolerant or vegan can substitute it with any non-dairy milk. Oat milk, in particular, closely mimics the richness of whole milk, offering a creamier result compared to almond or soy milk.

Achieving the perfect blend of robust flavors is key to a well-made gingerbread latte: the bitterness of the brewed espresso, and the earthy undertones of molasses, complemented by the zing of ground ginger and the comforting sweetness of cinnamon syrup.

The inclusion of molasses, albeit in a small amount, is crucial as it endows the latte with that signature gingerbread flavor. Be sure to mix the molasses with the ginger and cinnamon syrup prior to adding the brewed espresso. This ensures their flavors meld more effectively with the coffee and milk.

Those without an espresso machine with a built-in milk steamer need not fret. Simply opt for strong coffee and microwave-warmed milk, then combine the two using a handheld milk frother.

Brewing your gingerbread latte calls for the following ingredients:

2 teaspoons cinnamon syrup

1/2 teaspoon molasses

1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

1 shot brewed espresso (1 1/2 ounces)

1 cup whole milk

1 tsp ground cinnamon, for garnish

1 cinnamon stick, for garnish

To begin, combine the cinnamon syrup, molasses, and ground ginger in a heatproof mug. Add the shot of espresso next, then fill the rest of the mug with steamed milk. Finally, ornament the latte with a dusting of ground cinnamon and a cinnamon stick for that picture-perfect look. Now, your homemade gingerbread latte is ready to be savored!
